This past Thursday during 2nd period, our auditorium came alive with rhythm, color, and powerful expression as Liberty gathered to celebrate Unity Week through dance. The energy in the room was electric as students cheered and applauded for performances that beautifully highlighted the diverse cultures that make up our Liberty community.
Unity Week commissioners Sophia Baeza and Judith Gutierrez shared that their vision for the assembly was for students in the audience to see and feel the celebration of cultures through dance and music. That is precisely what filled the auditorium along with an overwhelming sense of pride, joy, and connection.

There are many outstanding students at Liberty High School who find multiple ways to be involved, and senior Keen Nguyen is certainly one of them. In a recent conversation, Keen reflected on what has motivated him throughout his four years at Liberty, and his message to underclassmen was simple but powerful: it is never too late to get involved.
Keen shared that though he was involved in multiple activites his freshman year, he continued to look for new things to get involved in that challenged him and helped him grow. That intentional approach has led to an incredibly well-rounded and impactful high school experience.

Liberty High School is proud to announce our 2025–26 Teacher of the Year, Antoinette “Toni” Scheler, and our Classified Employee of the Year, Linda Nunez. These two remarkable women represent the very best of Liberty, and we are honored to celebrate their leadership, heart, and service.

On Tuesday, February 10, Liberty’s library was transformed into a vibrant studio for our annual Family Paint Night. Led by art teacher Sarah Galicia, families gathered for an evening of creativity, connection, and community. Using a video camera to project her canvas for all to see, Mrs. Galicia guided participants step-by-step as they created a timely Valentine’s Day masterpiece.

On Saturday, February 7, Liberty’s Academic Decathlon team delivered a historic performance at the Kern County Academic Decathlon competition. Competing against 14 schools, Liberty earned an impressive 6th place overall, a tremendous accomplishment and the highest finish in school history. Just one year ago, the team placed 14th out of 18 schools. As the team motto reminds us, progress matters: as long as we improve each year, we are succeeding.
This year, the team embraced the quote “Ancora Imparo” – Michelangelo, at 87 years old. The Italian phrase means, “I am still learning.” It reflects the belief that learning is not an end result but a continuous journey. Under the leadership of coaches Mr. Hartman and Ms.Rascon, our students embodied this mindset, demonstrating resilience, growth, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

This past weekend, twenty-two students from Liberty High School’s We the People team traveled to Sacramento to compete in the California State We the People Congressional Hearings Competition. Liberty was one of only eight schools statewide to qualify for the state competition, a notable accomplishment made even more impressive by the fact that Kern County is widely regarded as one of the toughest regional competitions in California. Joining Liberty from the local area were Centennial and Arvin High Schools, with additional competitors representing Monterey, Amador Valley, Foothill (Pleasanton), Arcadia, and Tennyson High Schools.

The Liberty Mock Trial team concluded an impressive season that showcased some of the very best examples of project-based learning in action. Mock Trial is an academic competition that immerses students in the legal process, requiring them to analyze a case from multiple perspectives while developing skills in critical thinking, creativity, collaboration, and professional conduct. Students learn courtroom procedures, legal terminology, case analysis, and public speaking, while witnesses bring an element of theatre and storytelling to the courtroom experience. From attorneys to witnesses, journalists, and even a courtroom artist, every role contributes to the success of the team.

Liberty High School wrestling has never been just about wins and losses. It is about building young men and women who are prepared to serve something bigger than themselves.
This year, several Liberty wrestlers have committed to military service or are pursuing appointments to military academies as their next step after high school. In their own words, each athlete describes how the lessons learned through wrestling shaped their decision to serve and prepared them for the challenges ahead.

Liberty High School junior Ellee Statler reached a milestone few student-athletes ever achieve, scoring her 1,000th career point in girls basketball this past weekend. The accomplishment was officially celebrated Wednesday night at the home game, where teammates, coaches, and the Liberty community recognized a moment that will go down in school history.
