Liberty’s We the People teams competed against 10 teams from across the state last weekend near the Capitol in Sacramento, placing seventh overall. We the People is a constitutional competition for seniors in which a class team, made up of six units, demonstrates their understanding of a specific aspect of our nation's history through a four-minute prepared speech and six-minute Congressional style hearing questioning. The program's mission is to promote enlightened and responsible citizenry committed to democratic principles and actively engaged in the practice of democracy.

The Liberty GSA Club took a field trip to USC and the ONE Archives Monday, Feb. 5 with other Kern High School District GSA Clubs.

Our Lady Patriot soccer team are SYRL league champs and earned the #1 seed in the DI central section playoffs. They will have a bye Tuesday and then play at home Thursday @ 6pm. Let’s fill the stands!

Our Lady Patriot basketball team are SYRL league co-champs and the #8 seed in the DII central section playoffs. Come out to our round 1 home game this Wednesday at 6pm!

Liberty’s Mock Trial Team placed 5th in Kern County out of 18 teams in competitions at Kern County Superior Court. Liberty won three of its four rounds and narrowly lost to the 2nd place team in the county with a score of 409 points to 413 points. Competitions were held on Dec. 6, Jan. 10, Jan. 17 and Jan. 27.

Five Liberty students won prestigious individual awards in the competition. Those students were: Senior Maria Robison, first place attorney; senior Julia Powers, first place witness; sophomore Keen Nguyen, first place courtroom journalist, who will represent Liberty at the State Competition; sophomore Riley Douglas, third place witness; and senior Elise Enoch, third place courtroom artist.

Six Liberty musicians participated in the Kern County High School Honor Band and Orchestra concert last week at Mechanics Bank Theater. Students participated in a rigorous auditions process, performing a series of scales and etudes for multiple judges before being placed in their respective ensembles. After their December auditions, students participated in four rehearsals, followed by the Jan. 30 concert.

More than 70 junior class history students participated in the first History Showcase presented in the Liberty Library Commons at lunch Tuesday, Jan. 23. Individuals, pairs or groups of three students created 44 projects over the course of five months, their work culminating in the lunchtime punch-and-cookies reception.

We are excited to announce and welcome Coach Richie Bolin as our next head football coach. Coach Bolin is a well-respected positive leader, with high expectations and care for student athletes. He has a reputation as a coach that players play hard for. He graduated from North High School in 2005 and was a three-year starter for New Mexico State. He has coached for 15 years with the last 5 years as the head coach at North High School. He and his wife Stephanie are parents of seven-year old twin boys, Jaxson and Grayson.
