Payton Jenkins is a phenomenal example of what it means to be a Patriot. Over the past two years, I have watched him steadily grow as a leader on Liberty’s campus. He works hard in the classroom and in athletics, but what stands out most is his intentionality in how he shows up for others and contributes to his community.
Payton is a light to those around him. He continually strives to be the best version of himself while looking for ways to support others, often when others might simply walk by. Payton doesn’t just see people; he takes the time to make sure they know they matter. Whether it is a family member, friend, staff member, or complete stranger, he leads by example through his actions
Last year, when a student dislocated her knee, Payton stopped to check on her and asked if he could pray for her. His character is equally evident on the football field. Principal Slayton shared these observations:
During our game against Centennial, a Centennial player went down holding his leg and rolling in pain. Payton was the first to reach him and was seen holding his foot up to help stretch out a leg cramp. Just last week, during the Garces game, a Garces player went down with a knee injury, and Payton stayed with him, talking to him. Principal Slayton notes, "These are just a few incidents I have witnessed, and I am confident there are many more that go unnoticed. Payton does not do these things for recognition. He does them because compassion is at the core of who he is."
These moments reflect a young man who recognizes the humanity in others, even in the middle of competition. Payton understands that being a Patriot means more than working hard or achieving success. It means leading with integrity and making a difference in the lives of others.
