Principal Slayton recently had the opportunity to see the class in action. As sixth-period PE classes were wrapping up, the Athletic Leadership students came in to prepare the gym for a volleyball match. With just eight minutes to get everything ready, the students worked like a well-oiled pit crew. Every student knew their assignment and carried it out efficiently and with pride. Dressed in their official Athletic Leadership polos, they represented both their class and Liberty High School exceptionally well. It was a great example of the teamwork, preparation, and ownership this class is designed to develop.
Through these experiences, students are gaining a greater appreciation for everything that happens behind the scenes to make high school athletics possible. As the class transitions into the winter sports season, students will also participate in classroom lessons exploring the requirements and pathways involved in becoming a coach or athletic official.
Coach Prosser's goal is to expose students to the variety of roles within an athletic program and help them discover opportunities that may spark an interest in a future career after high school.
Students are enjoying the opportunity to learn by doing. Junior Briggs Wilbert describes it as a, “Fun, hands-on class that brings together a variety of students that play different sports to make LHS athletics better.”
Sophomore Luke Valverde shared, “It’s a cool class to be in and experience the many things that go into running high school athletics. I enjoy that many days we are working hands on and not sitting in a classroom.”
Athletic Leadership is another example of how Liberty continues to create opportunities for students to develop leadership skills, explore future interests, and contribute to the Patriot community in meaningful ways.
