Jason Armistead is a light in the lives of the more than 120 students who make up Liberty High School’s Marching Band and Colorguard. For him, being a band director is about much more than music and performances. It is about building relationships, creating belonging, and helping every student become the best version of themselves.
His students know they can turn to him when they are struggling at home or at school, even when their concerns have nothing to do with band. He listens, encourages, and works alongside parents to help students get back on track academically and navigate life’s challenges. Through his consistent support, he reminds each student that they matter and that someone believes in them.
Each year, Mr. Armistead creates an exceptional marching band production centered on a meaningful theme that stays with his students long after the season ends. Last year’s show focused on being a beacon of light and bringing hope to others. This year’s production, Refraction, explores how light bends and changes direction when it passes through something new, revealing something unexpected. Its message is powerful: “Bending is not breaking. It’s becoming.”
Jason Armistead deserves the Be a Light Award because his impact extends far beyond the field and band room. He is a trusted mentor, a steady source of encouragement, and someone who helps students find their way through life’s challenges. Through his dedication to more than 120 young people, he not only creates unforgettable performances but also helps his students recognize their own light and share it with the world.
