The ceremony was made even more meaningful through the personal stories shared by members of our Liberty Family. Coach Jarudd Prosser shared the story of losing his brother, Cody, after the events of September 11, 2001. Reflecting on the 25 years since that day, Coach Prosser shared, “I’m overcome with pride and the sense of unity. I’m proud of Cody and his sacrifice for all Americans. The sense of unity stems from thinking back to the days following the attacks.”
Senior Farrah Fuller reflected on the significance of the ceremony, sharing, “It was very powerful hearing Coach Prosser’s story. I was also impacted by The Tree Foundation. I love how they wanted to donate the tree for the lasting effect it will have.”
There was something especially meaningful about planting this tree at Liberty. Our school name, our Patriot mascot, and our PRIDE represent values that are deeply connected to the freedoms we remember today: liberty, courage, sacrifice, unity, and service to something greater than ourselves.
The conclusion of the ceremony started with Coach Prosser through the first shovel of dirt into the hole, followed by Coach Coleman Olivas who served in the Air Force, and Principal Slayton and then students in participation placing dirt around the tree, helping give this living memorial its roots.
We thank Historic Union Cemetery for providing the Garrison Flag, Conway Lopez for donating the Sugar Maple, and the Tree Foundation for providing this special opportunity to create a lasting memorial on our campus. As the Sugar Maple takes root and grows, we hope it will continue to remind our Liberty Family to remember those we lost, honor those who served, and never take our freedoms for granted.
