The evening began with families visiting tables representing the many opportunities available to our students, including academic programs, clubs, athletics, activities, and extracurricular programs. It was exciting to see so many students and families exploring ways to get involved and find their place at Liberty.
At 6:00, our Chorale students opened the evening by singing the National Anthem, followed by our Marching Band performing the Patriot Fight Song. Our Spirit Team then joined them for an energetic performance and spell-out that brought everyone together.
Throughout the evening, families enjoyed dinner and treats from our food trucks while connecting with some of the people and programs that support our students. Families visited the Parent Center, learned more about ELD supports, connected with counselors, and discovered the many resources available to help their students succeed.
One of the highlights for many families was the opportunity to meet our social worker, Lynzie Genel, and learn more about the mental health supports available to our students. Creating connections with trusted adults and knowing where to turn for support is an important part of helping every Patriot feel that they belong at Liberty.
Light Up Liberty
In keeping with this year's theme, Be the Light, families and students were invited to help us “Light Up Liberty.” Families wrote encouraging, inspirational, and uplifting messages on paper lightbulbs for fellow Patriots to read when they may need a little extra positivity or support. Those lightbulbs are now displayed in the Counseling Office, creating a bright reminder that even a few kind words can make a difference in someone's day.
Another special opportunity was available in the interventionist room, shared with our substance abuse counselor. Families were invited to write a note of encouragement to their student to be delivered during the school day. At times, the room was filled with parents taking the time to write a few meaningful words to their children. Nearly 100 handwritten notes were delivered to students on Thursday.
Lili Duncan, who began this tradition last year, shared why she continues to make it a part of Back to School Night:
“It doesn’t matter how old we are; we all need encouragement, especially from our parents. Sometimes, we just need to hear, ‘I still believe in you. I’m proud of you, and I’ll always be here for you.’ Those simple words can mean so much and remind us that we are loved, supported, and never alone.”
Those notes may have only taken a few minutes to write, but for the students who received them, they can mean so much.
Connecting in the Classroom
Families also had the opportunity to visit their students' classrooms and meet their teachers. I heard wonderful feedback from parents about the professionalism, preparation, and welcoming environment they experienced throughout the evening. It was clear that our teachers took great pride in creating classrooms where students can learn, grow, and feel supported.
The success of ALL students is ALL of our priority. When students, families, and Liberty staff work together, we create the conditions for growth to happen.
