Liberty Robotics Competes on the World Stage, Again!

After a slow start while adjusting to the intensity and level of competition, Team 11475B quickly found their rhythm and went on an impressive hot streak, raising the bar for future Liberty robotics teams. Throughout the week, Jonathan Lo, Meng Xu, Christopher Tang, Brandon Buendia, and Daiwiik Manila demonstrated exceptional teamwork, creativity, persistence, and integrity which are hallmarks of Liberty’s growing robotics program.

Competing at the highest level, the team finished 49th in their division with a strong 5–7 record, battling closely in every match and proving they belong among the world’s best.

“This week was very stressful because of the high level of competition, but we had several incredible moments,” shared Jonathan Lo. “It was an experience I will never forget.”

Meng Xu reflected on the challenge and growth the team experienced: “It was very stressful and hard work, but it gave me confidence we could compete at the highest level and gave me a feeling of accomplishment.”

Programmer Christopher Tang added perspective on the global scale of the event: “Worlds really shows you how much you still have to learn. Bakersfield is just a speck of dust compared to the other regions.”

For Brandon Buendia, the experience went beyond competition: “It was a great time and awe-inspiring. I loved meeting teams from other countries and regions.”

A Special Thank You

This year’s competition also marked the final robotics tournament for Mr. Tom Johnson, who will be retiring from teaching at the end of the school year. Mr. Johnson has dedicated countless hours to building and sustaining Liberty’s robotics program, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students.

His kind and selfless nature has created more than just a team, it has built a community where students feel supported, challenged, and inspired. Because of his commitment, this year’s team and so many before them have had the opportunity to grow not only as competitors, but as individuals.

As Liberty Robotics looks to the future, we do so standing on the foundation Mr. Johnson helped create. Thank you, Mr. Johnson, for your unwavering dedication and for the legacy you leave behind. Next year Mr. Eddie Watson will take the lead and he is excited to build on what Mr. Johnson has accomplished.
