Patriot Pride on Display at Special Education Track Meet

Once at Centennial, the energy and excitement continued as students participated in a variety of events designed to celebrate participation, teamwork, and fun. Events included the frisbee throw, Nerf javelin, softball throw, big ball throw, sock throw, long jump, broad jump, hurdles, the 100-meter dash, bowling ball race, and the 4x4 relay.

“The Special Ed track meet was one of the most fun and inspiring events that I have been a part of,” said Melissa Salazar, Liberty’s school psychologist. “The athletes brought so much energy, effort, and heart, and it was amazing to watch them compete and support each other. It’s a great reminder of how special these opportunities are for our students and our staff.”

Parents were thrilled to see their students competing, and for some families it was the first time they had the chance to watch their child participate in an event like this. The excitement was contagious as parents cheered and smiled while watching their students compete, especially during the sock throw, where loaded socks sailed through the air to the delight of everyone watching.

The day was filled with memorable performances and proud moments. In the mobility events, Jojo threw the Nerf javelin three feet, while Isabella and Abel each threw it two feet. In the sock throw, Jojo reached five yards, Abel threw four yards, Judith threw two yards, and Isabella threw one yard. On the track, Adam showcased impressive speed in the 100-meter dash, earning first place in both of his races.

The athletes’ enthusiasm was just as memorable as their performances. While preparing for the final relay, Jacob from Mrs. Landeros’s class confidently declared, “We’re going to run so fast our shoes will be on fire.”

Teachers and staff were equally inspired by the students’ determination and teamwork. John shared, “Adam had the spirit of an athlete. He stepped up when someone dropped out of the relay and helped the team.” Josiah said his favorite part of the day was “running and jumping,” capturing the pure joy of the experience.

Mrs. Darling summed up the sentiment shared by many of the staff members. “I was so proud of my students. They all participated and did it with a smile on their face. It made my heart so happy to see them having fun. They are all winners.”

For some students, their excitement was expressed in different ways. When asked if he liked the track meet, David used his communication device to say “yes,” then selected the “jog” icon with a big smile on his face.

Staff members also reflected on the meaning of the day. “The sun was shining and so were our kids,” said Sara. D’Angelo added, “Every student athlete was a champion today.” Sal echoed the spirit of the event: “Today was not just about winning. It was about making memories and having a good time.” Victoria agreed, saying, “Everyone was a winner and they tried their best.” Chioma shared, “I think it was spectacular, and I ran my heart out with my student.”

From the spirited sendoff at Liberty to the joyful competition at Centennial, the day was filled with pride, perseverance, and celebration. It was a powerful reminder that athletics are about far more than results. They are about community, opportunity, and the joy of participation. For Liberty’s student athletes, it was truly a day to remember.
