Academic Decathlon Makes History at County Competition

One of the most exhilarating parts of the competition is the Super Quiz, often described as the Kern County Super Bowl of Academic Decathlon. Held at Stockdale High School, all 14 schools filled the gym as teams competed in front of a live audience. Each school fields three teams of three students.

During each round, students answer 14 questions, two from each of the seven academic subjects: Literature, Art, Music, Social Science, Science, Economics, and Math. After hearing a question, teams have 10 seconds to deliberate before the moderator calls, “Pencils up.” Points are awarded based on how many team members answer correctly, with a maximum of 28 points possible per round.

The competition was intense. Final Super Quiz scores among the top three teams were:

Liberty High: 56
Stockdale High: 53
West High: 51

Liberty earned the highest Super Quiz score of the day, bringing home a team trophy and 11 individual medals. The gym was electric, and our students rose to the occasion.

This achievement reflects the dedication of our students, the support of Liberty’s outstanding teachers, and the valuable after-school sessions with guest speakers David Ziegler, Sarah Galicia, Tom Johnson, and Laurel Phillips. We are beyond proud of the countless hours of preparation and the teamwork displayed throughout the season.

Congratulations to our incredible team members (additional individual medals noted):

Lilynne Phelps (2)
