Liberty Mock Trial Wraps Up an Outstanding Season of Learning and Competition

At the beginning of the school year, students are given the details of a fictional “incident” and spend months preparing the case. They learn the roles and responsibilities of both the prosecution and defense, with students serving on both sides. Throughout the season, teams and witnesses compete against other schools at various stages of the competition, applying their knowledge of the law, case studies, and courtroom strategy in real-time. Liberty also had students competing on the journalism side, reporting on the case, as well as an artist who created a courtroom sketch as part of the competition.

Principal Slayton attended the Kern County Superintendent of Schools competition last weekend and shared her admiration for the team, saying, “I was blown away by our students and their ability to not only present their case, but to know when to object or how to defend their point when the opposing team objected.” Junior Maren Seals, who served as a defense attorney, reflected on the experience: “Mock Trial is a great way to learn about our judicial system and build public speaking skills. This year was a murder case and we had a great season. Presenting in front of a real judge is scary, but such an awesome experience. I’m excited to see what next year brings.”

Senior Keen Nguyen served as both an attorney and a journalist for the team and praised the entire group, especially the newcomers and the effort they put in throughout the season. He shared that he loves Mock Trial because it brings together skills learned in many different areas and applies them on one meaningful platform.

This year’s team was coached by defense attorney Kate Lee and counselor Sylvia Morales. Ms. Lee generously volunteers her time to support Liberty students in addition to her full-time career, providing invaluable real-world insight and mentorship. At the awards ceremony concluding the season, Keen Nguyen earned 1st place as a journalist, and Robert Clegg earned 2nd place as a journalist. Both students will advance to the state competition in Oakland. Additionally, Maren Seals and Keen Nguyen were recognized as Liberty’s two honorary students for their outstanding contributions.

Congratulations to our Mock Trial team on a remarkable season filled with growth, learning, and achievement. Their dedication and professionalism truly represent Liberty at its best.
