This past week, the group engaged in a timely and thought-provoking discussion about the pros and cons of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in school and in life. Working collaboratively at their tables, students had meaningful conversations about both the benefits and challenges of this rapidly evolving technology.
Students acknowledged that AI can be a powerful tool when used appropriately. They noted its efficiency, its ability to spark ideas, and its capacity to explain complex concepts in ways that are sometimes clearer or more accessible. Many shared that AI can help consolidate and organize notes, create podcasts on topics they are studying, generate practice tests, and develop study guides. Beyond academics, students discussed using AI to create workout plans, recommend playlists and books, and even help structure daily routines and planners.
At the same time, students demonstrated impressive critical thinking by recognizing the significant drawbacks of AI. They pointed out that AI can produce incorrect answers and often pulls from sources that are not credible. They expressed concern that overreliance on AI could limit creativity, reduce independent thinking, and discourage deep problem-solving. Students also acknowledged risks related to bias, academic dishonesty, laziness, and declining attention spans. Several voiced worries that AI could turn people into passive consumers rather than active thinkers.
Reflecting on the conversation, Principal Slayton shared, “As a community, I believe it is important to have these conversations with students. I fear the convenience of technology is going to ultimately cripple our learners in a way we may not realize for years.”
As Liberty and the Kern High School District continue to develop thoughtful AI policies, we encourage families and staff to engage in ongoing conversations about responsible technology use. Let’s work together to support meaningful learning, remain aware of potential pitfalls, and continue to value the rich educational opportunities that make Liberty a community of excellence that prepares students for college, career, and beyond.
