A New Way to Spark the Love of Reading at Liberty

Teachers have already noticed the positive impact of this new reading incentive. Many have shared that the novel vending machine has sparked renewed enthusiasm among students to earn points, not just for the prizes, but for the chance to walk away with a brand-new book. In this way, the machine is a double asset to Liberty: it motivates students to exemplify PRIDE values while also inspiring a love for reading.

This initiative aligns with Liberty’s broader commitment to improving literacy and fostering a culture of reading for all students. Schoolwide literacy practices are embedded in Tier I instruction, with additional supports and interventions available as needed. Liberty’s Literacy Team, made up of eight dedicated teachers across subjects, is also working to create meaningful platforms that celebrate reading and remind students of the joy books can bring.Teacher librarian Trish Froehlich says of the team's focus, "We want to change the narrative around reading from a requirement to a reward. This vending machine turns the discovery of a new story into a celebration, making literacy visible, exciting, and a celebrated part of our daily campus life."

During today’s grand reveal, two students were among the first to use their golden tokens. Senior Janiya Blackman selected her book and shared her excitement, saying, “I love that it is only 25 points for a free book!” Fellow senior Megan Chen also made her pick and noted that the experience felt different from buying a book at the bookstore. “I love the novelty of it,” she said — and truly, the NOVEL-ty of it all is part of the fun.
