PIQE Returns to Liberty High: Celebrating Eight Weeks of Family Engagement and Growth

Throughout the course, parents engaged in workshops covering vital topics such as social-emotional development, academic achievement, A–G university requirements, responsible decision-making, and financial aid opportunities. The sessions fostered open dialogue between families, teachers, and counselors while strengthening the bridge between home and school.

Kim Johnson, Liberty’s Title I Coordinator, shared her appreciation for the collaboration, saying:
“It has been incredibly rewarding to work with PIQE again this year and witness our parents connect, learn, and grow together. Seeing our Liberty families gain confidence and knowledge to support their children’s academic and emotional development is what makes this work so meaningful and rewarding. PIQE truly builds bridges between home and school, giving parents the tools they need to play an active role in their child’s success.”

Counselor Sylvia Morales also reflected on the impact of the program, stating:
“It was an honor to partner with our parents on this journey through the Family Engagement Program presented by Parent Institute for Quality Education (PIQE). The program empowered parents with meaningful information on topics such as social-emotional development, academic achievement, A–G university requirements, responsible decision-making, and financial aid. It also encouraged open communication with teachers and counselors while creating a welcoming space for parents to share experiences, form connections, and stay actively involved in their child’s education.”

During the celebration, parents participated in a Q&A session with Principal Leandrea Slayton and heard from a guest speaker who shared opportunities available for Liberty students at Bakersfield College. The event concluded with a heartfelt message from parent speaker Jose Gomez, father of student Camilly Gomez:
“Participating in PIQE helped me become more involved in my student’s academics and learning. It also showed me that there are no financial barriers, as we were given information about financial aid to help our children attend college and graduate. I encourage and recommend that other parents attend these informational workshops so that more students can achieve their goal of going to college.”

The evening was a powerful reminder that when schools, families, and the community work together, students thrive. Liberty High School extends its deepest gratitude to PIQE, our Title I team, and all the parents who made this program such a success.
