Student Spotlight: David Castillo – A Story of Strength, Courage, and Community

Since the age of ten, David has been living with epilepsy, a journey that has tested his resilience and strength in countless ways. Over the years, he has undergone multiple surgeries, each one a courageous step toward achieving seizure freedom. His most recent surgery, performed this past February, involved receiving an RNS implant designed to help control his seizures.

Through every challenge, David has demonstrated an unwavering spirit. He is admired for his hard work, honesty, positive attitude, and the kindness he extends to everyone he meets. His determination has inspired not only his classmates but also the entire Liberty High School community.

The students and staff at Liberty have been a steadfast source of support for David throughout his journey. In past years, he faced limitations that prevented him from fully participating in school events, such as his freshman year, when he watched homecoming from beyond the fence while undergoing an at-home EEG.

But this year was different. Now a senior, David declared with pride that he would be at homecoming, and he kept his promise. Thanks to the encouragement and care of Liberty’s staff and students, David didn’t just attend homecoming; he helped make it happen. The senior class set aside a special project for him and David took pride in painting part of the backdrop and proudly holding the Class of 2026 sign alongside his peers.

For his family, the moment was especially meaningful. Reflecting on the experience, David’s mom, Christy Castillo, shared, “This year’s homecoming was a special one for David, a moment of inclusion, accomplishment, and joy shared with a community that has stood by him every step of the way.”

David’s journey reminds us all of the power of perseverance and the importance of belonging. He is a true example of Liberty’s spirit, where strength meets heart and hope shines through every challenge. When David was asked about homecoming, his response won’t surprise anyone who knows him. With a smile on his face he responded, “Let’s go Dodgers!”
