This past Friday, March 28th, the Liberty Link Crew comprised of 144 student-leaders hosted the final Freshman Link activity of the year. Liberty was the first school in the district to bring Link Crew to its campus in 2001. Link Crew originated with Phil Boyte as a way to create and sustain school culture with upperclassmen mentoring and connecting with freshmen. On Liberty’s campus this evolved to Freshman Link as a way to grow the relationships and to create an opportunity to share Liberty’s core values and Patriot Way with the freshman.
Freshman Link happens in freshman PE classes once a month where Link Crew leaders are connected with the same group of students to discuss the challenges of high school and to demystify how to be successful. Link Crew advisors lead fun activities that tie to a meaningful life lesson, encouraging students to be their best version of themselves.
Junior Link Crew leader Reagan Young said she has become friends with all of the freshmen in her group and stays in touch with them in between Freshman Link events. She said, “I want to make freshmen feel like Liberty is their home.”
This past Friday students competed in a head, shoulder, knees, and toes activity, discussed the importance of choosing the “fires they keep going and the ones they let go out,” and ultimately wrote encouraging notes on mail labels that they stuck on one another.
Freshman Regan Actis said the leaders are truly awesome. She loves the activities and the monthly quotes. She said the quote this month truly resonated with her. She said, “A lot of people don’t listen to what people say… listening is very important.”
