The almond-packing event drew 65 students. Members of Liberty’s Just Serve Club, our sister Just Serve Club at Centennial, students from Frontier, members of Liberty’s National Honor Society and members of the Reading Club packaged two tons of almonds into 4,000 one-pound bags.
Debbie Powers, executive director of the Golden Empire Gleaners appreciated the students’ work. “These almonds will be distributed throughout Kern County and will add much to the food boxes we give out,” she said.
The packaging took more than two hours. Advisor Michelle Lord said, "It was wonderful to see students give up their Saturday morning to serve our community and have three clubs at Liberty come together to pull off this service project."
Last week, the Liberty Just Serve Club concluded its school-wide hygiene drive to gather items for hygiene kits for The Open Door emergency homeless center and the Jamison Children’s Center,a 24-hour temporary shelter care facility operated by the Human Services Department of Kern County for abused, neglected and exploited children. Club members also tied fleece blankets for Project Linus last week.
