On a rare one-off day, only the shot put and discus events at the Central Section South Area Track and Field Championships took place on Tuesday at Liberty. The remaining events will be held at Bakersfield High beginning at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday.
In the four events, Liberty junior Daniel Viveros and freshman teammate Faith Bender both cracked the top 10 in South Area meet history with their attempts.
Viveros won the discus with a toss of 179-feet, 8-inches.
That is the 11th-best in meet history. Of the top 10, four came weeks before Van Mounts (Bakersfield, 1997-98) and Matt Darr (Frontier, 2009-10) won state titles.
Viveros also won the shot put title at 60-8.5. That’s No. 9 in meet history. Four of the other top 10 throws came in state championship seasons for the throwers that season.
Bender’s top mark in the shot put of 41-1 is No. 9 in meet history and her discus throw of 151-1 is now sixth in meet history. Both are freshmen meet records.
