Patriots Read Across Liberty

Students and staff will celebrate “Patriots Read Across Liberty” next week with daily activities encouraging students to read, sponsored by the Liberty High School Literacy Council and the ASB.

Experts say that students who read increase their knowledge, improve their vocabulary, strengthen their memories and develop better analytical and writing skills. The LHS Literacy Council hopes that parents will encourage their children to read regularly at home.

Monday’s activity is a “30-Second Live Read-Aloud” with Dave Ziegler reading an excerpt  from Radium Girls during announcements. Students on the Principal’s List and Honor Roll will get Otter Pops at lunc.

Tuesday’s activity is a “Reading Blackout,” with students and staff dropping everything to read for 10 minutes after the daily announcements. Wednesday’s activity is a reading session in Liberty’s new “PAT-io” with drawings for new books. Thursday’s activity is “Dress as Your Favorite Book Character” with prizes for the top three character costumes at lunch on the outdoor stage where students and teachers will also be reading excerpts from their favorite books. Finally, Friday is “Read-a-Thon Pajama Day,” with a read-a-thon all day in the library, and Just Serve Club members reading to elementary school students in the morning. At lunch on Friday on the Outdoor Stage, a Special STAR Recognition Presentation where Principal Leandrea Slayton will award students vouchers donated from Chick-fil-A and Cane’s to several students who have shown reading growth on the STAR test.

LHS Literary Council member Michelle Lord said, “We hope focusing an entire week to celebrate reading will inspire students and staff to see the profound effect that reading widely has on students’ futures. Reading a good book is such a pleasurable activity. Not only does it broaden knowledge, but it builds academic success.”
