Liberty Robotic's Team Wins Tournament Championship

One of Liberty’s Robotics Club teams, known as 11475B,  won the tournament championship in the California Central Coast VEX Robotics Competition at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo last weekend. The same team already qualified for the State Championships at Cal State Bakersfield in March, with the ultimate goal of reaching the Vex World Championships in May.

Students in 11475B are: senior Victor Peel, junior Jonathan Lo, senior Jared Gabion, senior Liangxue Chen, senior Gurpreet Tandi, freshman Meng Xu, and junior Christopher Tang.

The Robotics Club is an extracurricular group advised by science teacher Tom Johnson. “These kids are brilliant,” he said. “They’re all super.”

The club buys parts for the robots and the students design, build, program and test their robots. “Team 11475B built two robots this year because they wanted to compete with a better robot,” Mr. Johnson explained.

The robots are remote-controlled and vaguely resemble children’s toys, except that they are built to specifications to fit within a cube that is 18-by-18-inches and are programmed by students to perform the various tasks needed to score points in each game.

The 2024-2025 Game VEX V5 Robotics Competition High Stakes is played on a 12-foot-by-12-foot square field. Two “alliances,” one “red” and one “blue, composed of two teams each, compete in matches consisting of a 15-second autonomous period followed by a one minute and 45-second driver-controlled period. The object of the game is to attain a higher score than the opposing alliance by scoring rings on stakes, placing mobile goals, and by climbing at the end of the match.

The other participating teams were: Team 11475C with Ty Nguyen, Remmy Comstock, Shahbaaz Guraya, Clayton Scovall; Team 11475D with Aydin Garcia, Abigail Chang 9, Giovanni Marquez,Juan Cisneros, Hector Gutierrez, and Adilynn Garcia.
