Students Compete in Math Competition

Math teachers conducted their fourth California Math League test for the school year last week with 109 students participating, according to math teacher Jose Castro.

Students may earn extra credit in their math classes, depending on their teacher, if they correctly answer at least one of the questions. There is also a state-wide contest among students in which Liberty participates.

Liberty’s team score, made up of the top five scores from the CAML test, was 20 points with five students correctly answering four questions each. Of those five students with the highest score, the winner of the $10 gift card for The Habit was senior Liangxue Chen, a calculus student.

After this test, Jaden Lee is still in the overall lead with a two-point lead over Thomas Hampton. Mr. Castro said, “There are four students within two points of each other, so this is still an open contest.”

In the competition among freshmen and sophomores, there are three students tied for first place, with two of them being freshmen. The freshmen are Abigail Chang and Brooke Porter. “It is very impressive to see freshmen competing at this level,” Mr. Castro said.

According to Mr. Castro, of the 109 students who competed in the test, 92 were able to correctly answer at least one question correctly.  Of the 92 students with one or  more correct answers, winners of a drawing for Dunkin’ Donuts $5 gift cards were senior Ethan Debugkey, junior Kara Campoy and senior Olivia Castillo.

There will be two more CAML tests this school year, with the next scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 12.
