The Liberty High School Social Studies Honors Society is hosting its annual Veterans Appreciation Event on March 12 and is seeking veterans who would like to participate. Invitations for the event will be sent next week to interested veterans.
“We would love to send an invitation via mail to any veterans who aren't already on our mailing list,” social studies teacher Brooke Richter said. “If you have a veteran in your life who would be interested in attending, please email me or teacher Rob Sausedo with their name and mailing address.”
The event, which has been held since 2016 except during Covid years, offers veterans the chance to sit down with honors students at tables in the gym to talk about their experiences in one of the military branches. In past years, the event has included vets from all branches and from conflicts from World War II to the Korean conflict and fromVietnam to the Gulf Wars. “We still have a vet who flew planes for Great Britain during World War II,” Ms. Richter said.
In past years, students and veterans have expressed their appreciation for the opportunity to participate. Vets have complimented students for their attentiveness and thoughtful questions. Approximately 90 veterans attended last year and up to 120 vets have participated in the past.
The event runs from 8:40 a.m. to 11 a.m. March 12 in the Liberty High School gym. The event includes brunch, coffee, music and the student interviews. Veterans are encouraged to bring uniforms, photos or memorabilia to show students. There will be special parking near the gym for the convenience of participants.
