Liberty’s ASB student leadership classes delivered gifts Wednesday, Dec. 18, to Munsey Elementary School students through the annual Adopt A Patriot project. Students, families and staff members “adopted” an elementary school student and fulfilled holiday wishes for toys and clothes for the children from lists their teachers compiled. Each child’s gift was packed in a new backpack, donated by Liberty’s English Honor Society.
ASB Advisor Brooke Slayton thanked contributors to the project. “Thank you for your generosity and giving spirit,” she said. “My highlight is watching their eyes twinkle while opening gifts. They are just as excited about getting a new backpack as they are for what’s in it.”
Mrs. Slayton said that some of the children at Munsey saved some of their gifts to unwrap on Christmas morning.
The National Honor Society donated six huge bins of canned food to the Salvation Army in November and gathered new toys in December for its annual toy drive. Members of the NHS participated in donating the toys and loading them into the Salvation Army truck. These toys are given to families who sign up for the Salvation Army program based on economic needs during the holiday season, along with bags of groceries so they can have a great holiday celebration.
The ASB also hosted its annual blanket-tying project after school on Thursday, Dec. 12 in the Library Commons. The supplies for the 10 double-sided fleece blankets were purchased by ASB and students were invited to come for hot chocolate and snacks as they completed the blanket projects.
ASB Senior Braden Mendiburu said, “The strong sense of unity created by this event during the heart of the Christmas season is nothing short of inspiring. Watching our diverse student body come together, even amidst the demands of winter finals, to devote their time to a cause larger than themselves is a testament to our collective spirit and dedication.”
