Students Help With Read Across America

Twenty students from the LHS Reading Club went to read at Almondale Elementary School. Reading Club advisor Michelle Lord and counselor Kerri Ussery accompanied the students: Julissa Gutierrez, Judith Gutierrez, Julia Powers, Belladonna Arevalo, Amoria Arevalo, Valeria Fernandez, Lydia Halbrook. Marilyn Montes Ayala. Huy Tieu, Katherine Farhat, Nour Farhat, Lamera Farhat, Nate Nielsen, Cole Medveal, Jazzmine Perez, Kambria Adams, Milanna Mcclanahan, Daniel Lovas, Noah Caberra, and Maria Hinds

Another group of nine LHS students, organized by student Abraham Lopez and accompanied by social studies teacher Brooke Richter, went to American Elementary School. The students donated books and read to the students. The other students who participated were: Maria Robison, Monica Lopez, Andee Jacobson, Fatima Telles, Daniela Ubaldo, Elim Recinos, Dalilah Moya, and Ariel Spray.

We read to most classes and then we helped with a rally, where Abraham was one of eight people -- a few teachers and one sixth grader -- to be ‘pied’ as a reward for students who read for 30 minutes,” Ms. Richter said. “We had a diverse group of students -- sophomores, juniors, and seniors -- with different backgrounds and career interests. What brought us all together was a love of reading and enriching children's learning experiences.”

Football Coach Richie Bolin also took six varsity football players to read at Harris Elementary: Kyndrie Bolton, Connor Mullin, Jalen Murphey, Jacob Ramos, Saigen Sampayan, and Brock Wattenbarger.

Abraham Lopez is a celebrity at American Elementary school where he gets a pie in the face during Read Across America Week.
