Math teacher Jose Castro said it can be a huge problem for “a student who returns from school after three days with no idea of what was going on in his or her classes.”
Teachers, counselors and administrators are encouraging students and their families to keep in touch with their teachers during illnesses. It’s a good idea to find out what has been going on in a student’s classroom during illness, so when students are still recuperating at home they have classwork to do.
According to counselor Kerri Ussery, “A great way for students to stay on track academically when they are absent is to check Canvas each day. Many teachers post assignments, videos, links and information here to help absent students. Students can also follow up with an email to a teacher if they have any questions.”
While many teachers post information on Canvas, the learning management system, not all teachers do. Mr. Castro explained, “To me the most important thing is communication with the teachers. Parents or students should email teachers and ask for directions for the days of the absences.”
Mrs. Ussery added that parents and students can also reach out to counselors for additional information and support.
