“It is a way to reach out when it’s not particularly safe to be in the company of elderly veterans,” said Amanda Brummer, an LHS history teacher. Mrs. Brummer added that the local veterans include those who served during World War II, the Korean Conflict, and Vietnam, as well as recent veterans who served during recent conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq.
The cards wish the veterans well. One student wrote, “Words aren’t enough to express the gratitude myself and others hold in our hearts for your service.”
In addition to sending cards to specific veterans, the cards were also sent to retirement communities and veterans associations throughout Kern County. More than 130 students participated in the project.
Mrs. Brummer said the students would like to send cards to more veterans next year. To add a veteran to the list of recipients, contact [email protected].
